Aalborg Teater presents their acclaimed documentary theatre performance “Ukrainian Women” during CPH STAGE. Here, six Ukrainian women take the stage as themselves and share their experiences, joys and sorrows of a life that – common to all of them – was changed once the war came to them.
On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine. As a result of the war, many Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes. Women have abandoned their husbands. Children have abandoned their fathers.
While the news is about world politics, military support, great powers, (failed) peace deals, chaos and weapons systems, this documentary theatre performance gives a voice to those it is about: women who have fled but aren't heard in the news stream.
The performance is curated by CPH STAGE and presented in collaboration with Aalborg Teater and the Royal Danish Theatre.
Before the performance on June 5 you can experience the talk “THE LIVED STORIES ON STAGE". Read more here.

In “Ukrainian Women”, we encounter real people with real stories, and it is precisely this authenticity that has been central to our decision to select the production. Here, the audience is presented with a moving and visually powerful example of how performing arts can be created from real-life experiences with a high level of artistic quality, as personal accounts of displacement, loss and new lives in Denmark are transformed into a shared narrative. A clear directorial approach elevates the staging and renders the stories universal and widely resonant. The production speaks directly to our present moment and fosters a deep understanding of the conditions shaping life as a refugee in Denmark.
