SONG OF 8

In Song of 8, we consider the visionary space made available through the unbounded affectual energy of the erotic. A significant part of the research involved attempting to understand the notion of ‘down’, a concept that rides a blurred line between the metaphoric and concrete. Articulating what ‘down’ is involves, to some degree, a mapping of the immaterial world, one which will be idiosyncratic to the traveler who ventures there. In traveling ‘down’ one takes a circuitous round trip that may follow similar routes but will always arrive in a unique place. It is the diversity of these destinations that we explore in our Song.

THE COMPANY: INSTITUTE OF INTERCONNECTED REALITIES

The Institute of Interconnected Realities (IIR) is a platform influenced by the concept of Decentralized Choreography. The implication of this term is that the choreographic event unfolds in multiple sites simultaneously none of which are more important than the others. Decentralized Choreography is not only a concept that inspires choreographic thinking on stage but under the IIR it offers new perspectives on dramaturgy, production, spectatorship, curation a.o. The IIR supports and presents research projects and artworks – in various scales and media – that look at the potential of choreographic thinking. The IIR is a choreographic event in itself.

INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY

Song of 8 premiered in the midst of lockdown and subsequently there was no focus on touring or contacting international partners. The company therefore very much hopes that the International Days at CPH Stage will be a platform for exposing the work and establishing new international contacts. The theme of the erotic and the fact that Song of 8 is both a concert and a dance piece makes the piece relevent for various contexts. With Song of 8 the company would like to focus on venues and festivals that have a cross disciplinary focus. Concretely the company is very interested in building a long term relation with venues in the neighboring countries Norway, Sweden, Finland and Germany – and extending out to relevant venues in Brussels and Vienna. Being part of this context could also later open up for long term connections outside of Europe.

FORMAT AND SUSTAINABILITY

The company’s approach to sustainability includes general working conditions as well as touring. The main strategy is to build long-term relationships which allow ongoing, slow processes. This year the Institute of Interconnected Realities received a 2 year basic funding from the Danish Arts Council and landed three long-term national co-producers; Husets Teater and Dansehallerne in CPH, as well as Aaben Dans in Roskilde. The funding has allowed IIR to move out of the project economy, where the means never extend to post-production, international sales and networking.
