PRIMUS

The dramaturgy articulates a sense of circularity in a continuous transformation of symbols of creation and destruction, life and death. Through the use of archetypes, each subject or object in this universe brings forward its opposite creating a new beginning

The music score and the sustained movement create a charged space forming tableus that explore the sculptultural value of performance and the performative value of sculpture.

The piece features a large sculptural element created in collaboration with visual artist Signe Klejs. This is a circular surface which comes to life with the light from a morning’s sunrise in an ever shifting design which floods the stage with fluctuating colour combinations.

PRIMUS is the first work of a new trilogy entitled BIG BANG, centered around the concept of creation. 

The work premiered at Godsbanen in Aarhus, September 2020 and was presented at K: Selekt at The Royal Danish Theater in Copenhagen, September 2020. As one of the curated pieces for CPH STAGEs International Days 2021, PRIMUS will play live 4th of June 2021 at Dansekapellet in Copenhagen..

Part of PRIMUS was developed during a residency at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Denmark in October, 2019 and a residency at Turnéteatret in Trondelag, Norway in November 2019.

THE COMPANY : SVALHOLM  

Founded by choreographer Nønne Mai Svalholm, SVALHOLM explores the sculptural dimension of bodily movement and the performative dimension of sculptural elements.

The artistic vision is to examine existential questions and challenge choreographic thinking.

Since 2015 SVALHOLM has been working with a dogma: staging the non-traditionally schooled body and people over the age of 60. Between 2015-2019 we created a trilogy of choreographic work inspired by the theme “Rethink Choreography/ Rethink Ageing" where senior citizens take center stage. The trilogy is comprised by CIRCUIT (2016), ULTIMA (2017) and GRAVITY (2019).

The new trilogy is entitled BIG BANG, centered around the concept of creation. The BIG BANG trilogy develops the dogma further, among other things, by including professional choreographers and performers on stage. PRIMUS is the first work in the BIG BANG trilogy and is centered around the concept of beginnings. PRIMUS premiered September 1st, 2020 at Godsbanen in Aarhus and played at The Royal Danish Theatre as part of K:Selekt, September 2020.

INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY

SVALHOLM will focus its international development on 3 areas: Nordic countries, Korea and Canada. In 2019 SVALHOLM participated in PAMS selected by The Danish Arts Foundation to share new knowledge and experience. As a result, a  collaboration started with choreographer Kim Yun Gyu, artistic director of Dance Theatre Tic. Additionally SVALHOLM was selected to participate during 2020-21 in the International Market Development organized by the Canadian Association of the Performing Arts to establish dialogue between Canadian artists and creators from all over the world.
