THE COMPANY: UPPERCUT DANSETEATER

Uppercut Dance Theater invites you to a fresh fusion of different dance genres, which is illustrated through the individual dancers’ different backgrounds within e.g. capoeira, break dance, acrobatics and contemporary dance. With Uppercut, the Danish dance scene has taken on a whole new dimension of physical equilibrist expression.

This new language of movement has contributed enormously to the dance scene in Denmark, as it challenges the current perception of modern dance. Uppercut’s special style is also felt in the mood of each performance, where the constant weave between the dark and powerful aesthetics, and the more comical elements suddenly appear when you least expect them.

INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY

Initially, the company is looking to collaborate with theaters in Europe. BENCHED will be offered in 30 and 45 minute versions and can therefore be presented as part of a double bill or as a stand alone show. Benched was originally created for outdoor venues, making it a versatile show to program; it can be performed in a black box, arena or any outdoor stage.

The benches used in BENCHED are available in two different sizes, allowing the show to fit on a variety of stage dimensions. Several international presenters approached the company when BENCHED performed at Copenhagen Summer Dance. Tours in Sweden and Germany have since been booked. This indicates that BENCHED has a strong international potential and that it is a versatile dance piece that fits well into many different programs. BENCHED was created for adults, but after performing the show this season, we have found that young and adult audiences of all ages, from dance novices to seasoned amateurs, enjoy BENCHED.

FORMAT AND SUSTAINABILITY

One of the reasons the company seeks to work with European locations is that the accessories are heavy and bulky. Transporting the accessories by land and over relatively short distances is their contribution to the sustainability agenda.
